Exercises in Sequence

Jake Bresnehan·

For years there's been a gap in Sequence that I've been quietly embarrassed about.

You could plan your week beautifully. You could log your climbing. But the actual strength session — the one where you're standing at the rack trying to remember whether you did 4x5 at 60kg last time or 4x5 at 65 — lived in a note on your phone, or a spreadsheet, or nowhere at all.

That's fixed.

Build the Session

Exercises are a real part of a workout now. Pull them from the library or create your own, then set up the sets: weight and reps, reps only, duration, distance, time reps, or intervals. Hangboard repeaters get an interval layout built for repeaters, rather than a box that says "reps" and a shrug.

Group two exercises into a superset and Sequence understands what you mean — no rest fires between them, only after the last one. Small thing. It's the difference between a timer that helps you and a timer you fight.

Run It at the Gym

This is the part I care most about. Open the workout on your phone and tick sets off as you go. The rest timer counts down with a beep so you're not watching the screen, it keeps running when you lock the phone or wander off to fill your water bottle, and the screen stays awake for the whole session.

It doesn't pause your music either. That one took longer to sort out than it should have.

Then It's Just There

Every set you complete becomes history. Head to Metrics and each exercise has its own page — sessions performed, a progression chart, and your all time bests. Max weight, estimated 1RM, best volume, longest hold. Warm-ups are excluded, because a warm-up isn't a PB.

Record effort per set, which I'd encourage, and you get the thing raw numbers never tell you: whether 65kg was comfortable or whether it nearly finished you.

One more thing worth knowing. Edit your template all you like — change the weights, swap an exercise, restructure the whole thing — and your completed sessions don't move. What you did is what you did.

It's live for everyone now. Go and have a poke around.
